My Three Sources for Group Podcast Project

1.Allusionist 121. No title

The title of the podcast is “No Title”, and it’s Ep.121 from Allusionist. It hosted by two Britain podcasters, Helen Zaltzman and Martin Austwick, It was recorded in 2014, and it’s not a regular studio podcast because you can hear the sounds of the crowd. Helen Zaltzman and Martin talk about “why the English language is riddled with all this gender” by analyzing the word “Ms”. Although the gist of the podcast is not about Marvel or superheroes, it does reveal how gender values were in early Marvel comics. I know Marvel was acquired by Disney in 2009, and Ms Marvel has nothing to do with Disney. However, by learning how gender values were in early society, we can know how did they change over time.

I'll use a sentence says by Helen Zaltzman when she describes the appearance of Ms Marvel. Here's what she says: “she’s pretty clothed from the neck to just under the boobs"(11:22). It shows to me that the revealing outfit of Ms Marvel is not only sexual implication but also sends false messages about the gender value of the female to the readers.

2.Kelly Sue DeConnick is a ‘Pretty Deadly’ Writer of Comics

This is also a podcast. It's an interview with Kelly Sue Deconnick conducted by Mimi Chan. It was studio-recorded in 2019. Kelly talks about gender equity, her works, her family, and the reads she likes in the podcast. Therefore, the progress of the podcast mainly relies on Kelly's answers to Chan's questions.

Kelly is the creator of Captain Marvel. She points out that Captain Marvel is a feminism figure that she creates to "speak up" for women in her own way. Kelly Sue DeConnick: “We do need to talk about gender representation. We do need to let the sunshine in, and talk about the things that happened" (05:37). I'll use it to emphasize the growing feminism.

3. Opinion: The Next Phase For Marvel Seems to Be Made Up of Mostly Gender Swapped Characters.

It's an article from an influential public speaker and presenter Kambrea Pratt. This article was published in 2020, December 28th. Kambrea Pratt states her opinion about Marvel putting more feminism into the movie Avengers: Endgame. She supports the idea of putting more diversity in their films, but she doesn't like the way that Marvel uses to achieve gender diversity. She thinks that stiffly insert female superheroes into the storyline lowers the quality of the movie. According to Kambrea Pratt, “we get diversity just for diversity sake, instead of good stories and characters.” Marvel is doing this just because the audience wants to see. This is a point I will use in my speaking part.
